Risks & Benefits
of Counseling

Individuals enter mental health counseling for a number of reasons. Some want to make changes to address current stressors in their life, process past or current life issues, heal from mental health issues, discuss career options, regulate emotional distress, refine the vision for their life, and/or improve interpersonal relationships. During the initial session, Erica will work with the client to come up with individualized goals for counseling.

There are benefits and risks to entering into counseling. Some of the risks include uncomfortable or painful feelings if we discuss difficult or painful aspects of your life as you make sense of your story and how your history is impacting your present. The process of self-disclosure can bring up feelings of vulnerability and anxiety. I will walk with you throughout the process and help mitigate these risks so you can reach your goals. The counseling process belongs to you and we only work with what you bring to the table.

There are many benefits to counseling. You may find that you experience relief, emotional regulation, integration and healing of traumatic experiences, as well as an increased sense of hope and peace. Other benefits include improved relationships, assertiveness, communication skills, stress relieving habits, clearer sense of personal core values, ability to set boundaries, self acceptance and a greater sense of who you are.

There are no guarantees on the outcome as each client is a unique individual. You always have the right to refuse services. If questions about the process arise, you are always encouraged to ask questions or share when something is not working. My goal is to tailor counseling to fit each unique individual.
